Chicago Municipal Code Chapter 8-32

Chicago's current Noise and Vibration Control ordinance is Chapter 8-32. It uses source-specific rules rather than one universal daytime and nighttime limit for every sound heard in a residence.

Examples of Source-Specific Rules

Mechanical stationary equipment: from 8 PM to 8 AM, §8-32-090 sets 55 dB(A) at 100 feet or more and 70 dB(A) at 10 feet or more, measured away from the source property
Construction, repair, or demolition equipment: generally prohibited from 8 PM to 8 AM within 600 feet of a residential building or hospital, subject to stated exceptions
Loading and unloading: from 10 PM to 7 AM, handling that causes a noise disturbance in a residential district or noise-sensitive zone is prohibited

Interpreting a Phone Reading

A reading taken inside an apartment cannot be compared directly with a limit defined at 10 feet, 100 feet, a property boundary, or another prescribed location. Identify the source category and the code's measurement conditions before drawing a compliance conclusion.

How to File a Complaint

Call 311 or use the CHI 311 portal to ask which service request applies. Chapter 8-32 authorizes different city departments to enforce different provisions, so the responsible agency can depend on the source and circumstances.
