NYC Administrative Code ยง24-218
New York City's noise code sets specific decibel limits for residential areas. Unreasonable noise is defined as any sound that exceeds ambient levels by more than the limits set in the code.
Residential Noise Limits
- 7 AM - 10 PM: Noise should not exceed 45 dB(A) inside a residential unit from an external source
- 10 PM - 7 AM: Noise should not exceed 42 dB(A) inside a residential unit from an external source
- Construction: Prohibited between 6 PM and 7 AM on weekdays, all day weekends and holidays (with limited exceptions)
How to File a Complaint
Call 311 or use the NYC 311 app to file a noise complaint. Include the date, time, duration, and type of noise. Having documented evidence with decibel readings significantly strengthens your complaint.
